About Wessel Ranch

Our Story

Wessel Ranch is a family-owned and operated cattle ranch based near Lavina, Montana. While we proudly recognize 1934 as the beginning of Wessel Ranch in Montana, our family's agricultural roots extend back even further.

Michael "Mike" Wessel was born in West Prussia, Germany, in 1884. As a young man, he immigrated to the United States and eventually settled in North Dakota with his wife, Louise Sueltz Wessel. Together they established the family's farm, where they raised their children and instilled the values of hard work, stewardship, and agriculture that continue to guide our family today.

Their son, Lester E. Wessel, was born in North Dakota in 1914. In 1934, he came to Montana, where he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps on the Fort Peck Dam project. After completing his time with the CCC, he traveled by train to Dillon and went to work for the historic Gilbert Ranch in the Ruby Valley.

On October 5, 1940, Lester married Eleanore Robinson, who had been raised on her family's ranch near Sheridan, Montana. Together they spent more than 50 years ranching in the Ruby Valley, building a respected Hereford operation while raising four children. Lester became known as an accomplished cattleman, receiving numerous breeder and producer awards throughout his ranching career. Eleanore was equally dedicated to the cattle industry and served as President of the Montana Cattlewomen's Association in 1985 and 1986.

Their son, Lester F. "Beans" Wessel, carried on the family's ranching tradition with a deep passion for Hereford cattle and the livestock industry. Widely respected for his knowledge, instincts, and stockmanship, Beans devoted his life to raising quality Herefords and caring for the land. His commitment to family, cattle, and agriculture continues to influence Wessel Ranch today.

In 1992, the family relocated its ranching operation from the Ruby Valley to the former Ford Brown Ranch near Reed Point, Montana. Shortly afterward, the operation moved to a ranch outside Musselshell, where the family continued raising Hereford cattle. During those years, Scott's brother, Fred Wessel, and Pam's brother, Keith Swenson, were both actively involved in the day-to-day operation of the ranch.

In 2008, Wessel Ranch expanded by purchasing its current ranch near Lavina, Montana. Although the Musselshell property was sold, the family continued leasing and operating it for several more years before fully consolidating the ranching operation near Lavina.

Today, Wessel Ranch proudly carries forward more than a century of family agricultural heritage and over 90 years of Montana ranching history.

Our Philosophy

Our goal is simple: to produce practical Hereford cattle that perform where it matters most—on working ranches.

Every breeding decision is made with the long-term success of the commercial cattle producer in mind. We emphasize structural soundness, longevity, maternal ability, functional udders and teat structure, sound feet, feedlot performance, and cattle capable of thriving under the demanding dry-range conditions of eastern Montana.

Our cow herd spends most of the year grazing native Montana rangeland. During the winter, cattle are supplemented with hay, while replacement heifers are developed on hay, grass, and cake pellets to promote proper growth to mature size and achieve excellent artificial insemination and natural-service conception rates.

Artificial insemination is used on replacement heifers that respond to our synchronization program and on selected proven cows, allowing us to continually improve the genetics of the herd while maintaining the practical traits our program has been built upon for generations.

At Wessel Ranch, we believe honesty, stewardship, hard work, family, and quality livestock are the foundation of a successful ranch. Every decision we make is guided by these values as we strive to leave the land and our operation stronger for the next generation. 

For generations, the Hereford breed has been the foundation of Wessel Ranch. We continue to believe in Hereford cattle for their maternal ability, longevity, disposition, feed efficiency, and performance in commercial ranching environments. 

Wessel Ranch Today

Wessel Ranch primarily serves the commercial cattle industry while continuing to rebuild and expand its registered Hereford genetics with the goal of once again offering a strong seedstock program.

Our herd includes active registered Herefords, descendants of previously registered cattle, and a commercial herd developed largely from generations of Hereford genetics, with a small number of black baldy cattle.

Weights and performance records are collected throughout the herd whenever cattle are processed. Complete performance records and EPD information are maintained on our active registered cattle.

Each fall, our feeder calves are primarily marketed to the feeding industry through public auction, most often at St. Onge Livestock in St. Onge, South Dakota. We also welcome direct inquiries from feedlots and have successfully marketed entire calf crops through private treaty agreements.

Open females, dry cows, cull cows, and bulls are marketed as they become available. As our registered Hereford program continues to grow, we look forward to once again offering quality Hereford seedstock to fellow cattle producers.

Education and continuous improvement remain an important part of our operation. Cody is Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Certified and applies those science-based management practices throughout his work at Wessel Ranch. 

Conservation & Stewardship

Caring for the land is just as important as caring for our cattle. At Wessel Ranch, we are committed to responsible grazing management, wildlife conservation, and protecting Montana's natural resources for future generations. Our partnership with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has helped shape many of the conservation practices we continue to use today.

The Family Today

Scott Wessel

Scott continues the Wessel family’s multigenerational ranching tradition, managing the day-to-day operations of Wessel Ranch while carrying forward the breeding philosophy established by previous generations. His focus remains on producing practical, functional Hereford cattle that succeed under Montana’s demanding conditions. His wife, Amanda, also helps with ranch operations whenever needed.

Pam Wessel

Pam oversees the ranch’s office management, accounting, recordkeeping, and administrative responsibilities. Her work behind the scenes keeps the business organized and operating smoothly, and she has been an integral part of Wessel Ranch and its continued success for decades.

Cody Wessel

Cody represents the next generation of Wessel Ranch. He manages the ranch’s direct-to-consumer beef program and leads its online presence, marketing, and technology initiatives. He also assists with daily ranch operations while helping develop new ways to connect customers with Wessel Ranch and its cattle.
